PALS Certification FAQs
What is PALS?
PALS stands for Pediatric Advanced Life Support. It builds upon the fundamentals of high-quality BLS and introduces advanced pediatric life support techniques, such as advanced airway management, ECG rhythm interpretation, the Pediatric Assessment Model, and the use of cardiovascular and respiratory medications.
Who should take the PALS class?
The PALS course is intended for healthcare professionals and medical personnel who manage pediatric emergencies. This includes doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other clinicians working in emergency medicine, critical care, or pediatric settings. It's also suitable for those seeking to renew their PALS certification.
How long does the PALS class take?
A full PALS class generally lasts 5 to 8 hours, depending on breaks, the number of participants, exams, and hands-on practice sessions.
CPRNY also offers a blended-learning format: a 2-hour online portion followed by an in-person skills session to complete the certification.
Is there an online option or blended-learning format?
Yes. CPRNY offers a blended-learning PALS class where participants complete the didactic portion online, then come to an in-person session to demonstrate and practice skills under instructor supervision.
Does PALS include or replace BLS?
No — PALS does not replace BLS. BLS covers basic life support for adults, children, and infants (CPR, choking relief, AED use, etc.). PALS is focused specifically on pediatric life support in cardiac, respiratory, or shock emergencies.
How long does PALS renewal take?
A PALS renewal class typically takes 5 to 8 hours, similar to the full certification course, depending on class size and format.
How do I replace a lost PALS card?
Since certification is delivered via eCard, you can log in to the AHA eCard portal (ecards.heart.org) to retrieve or reprint your card. CPRNY can also assist with retrieving your certification if you need help.
Is there a PALS practice test?
Yes. You’ll be required to complete an official PALS pretest (online) before the class. You can retake the pretest as many times as needed until you pass. In addition, third-party PALS practice tests are available online for extra preparation.
What should I bring to the PALS class?
Yes. The AHA ACLS pretest must be completed before your in-person session.
You’ll receive a pretest link or access code from CPRNY after registering. You can retake it as many times as needed to achieve a passing score.
How much does PALS certification cost?
Pricing varies depending on location, format (in-person vs blended), and instructor. Contact CPRNY directly (or check our class registration page) for current PALS rate information.
When will I receive my certification after class?
You should receive your PALS eCard within one business day after successful completion of your class (barring any administrative delays).
